Oh wait... Just kidding. I'm in Salem, Oregon! We've just gotten a
booty-load of snow. And by that I mean like 11 inches. Pretty cray
cray. So we've been "grounded" since Thursday. We went walking to some appointments on Thursday, then Sister A got sick and we've been pretty much stuck inside every since. Poor thing..not fun.
Despite filling out my third visa application, I actually have some
good news when it comes tone travel department! I got a Tiwi card!!
Let me tell you what exactly that means, young padawans. Tiwi is this little white box that is stuck up in the front windshield of outer
car. It tracks our driving and even talks to us sometimes. ("Check
your speed!") To be able to drive in the OSM, you have to have a Tiwi card that signs you in at the beginning of the day. Usually visa
waiters don't have those for obvious reasons. But I filled out the
paperwork and whatnot, and now I have a Tiwi card! I consider myself officially an OSM missionary now!
So for the majority of the week, we've been inside filling out our
online area book and not turning into Popsicles. Although I may or may not have made a sister missionary snow angel. :) Our neighbor then told us to make a Mormon missionary snowman, but ain't nobody got time for that! Sister P and Sister A have named my alter ego. Her name is BonQuifa and she's a hoot.
Here's your quote from B (someone we are teaching) for the week: (after hearing we were still coming for our lesson despite the blizzard) "They're working in this??
Why don't they go inside and work on themselves?"
That could sound pretty snarky is you say it the wrong way, but B
is the bomb.com and wanted us to take some time to work on ourselves rather than helping everyone else for one. Haha he's funny. After watching this Mormon Message about the sacrifices a family made to get sealed in the temple we asked B what he thought about the video. He said, "Working in a nickel mine must really suck." I'm like alright mister! I know you've got deep insightful thoughts swirling around in your noggin! Don't even try that one on me! But it was still pretty funny. So there, two B quotes for the price of one! That's a steal, folks!
Yesterday, church was cancelled for the stake, so we had a sacrament meeting for just the missionaries. It was pretty awesome. Missionaries gave talks, and Sister P and I sang a mash-up of "I Know that My Redeemer Lives" and "I Feel My Savior's Love." It was a pretty arrangement, but we couldn't get a pianist in to practice with us, so it was a cappella.
Those are just some of the highlights of another crazy, awesome, crazy awesome, fun, snow-filled week in the OSM!
Keep it real.
Stay in school.
Remember who you are and what you stand for.
Preach the gospel!!

February 3, 2014 Another Cray Cray Week in the OSM (Oregon Salem Mission)
Oi todos! (translation: hey errrybody!)
^ That's probably the most Portuguese I've said in a while. #visawaiterstruggs
Oh wait. That's a lie. When we pray together as a companionship I
say it in Portuguese. And we pray together A LOT. But that's still the
extent of my language practice. It is what it is.
Life in Oregon is sah-weet!
And life with iPads is sah-weet!!
We got our fancy shmancy ipads this past Tuesday and they're
awesome! We got together with another zone for a technology roll-out
with President Samuelian and other leadership. Our planners, area books,
scriptures, basically our lives are on these things
now. I could tell a lot of missionaries have been feeling apprehensive
about using technology, but this is the direction the Lord is taking His
work. President asked us how hard the work would be if we didn't have a
cell phone, then he asked how hard it would
be if we didn't have texting. As a missionary working with the young
single adults, I can tell you that it would be impossible. I send more
text messages now as a missionary than I ever did before. If we didn't
have texting we couldn't effectively do the work,
if any work at all. He drew a parallel to this new technology. In a
very short amount of time, taking away the technology we have would be
detrimental to the work. And I can really see how that's true. We've
already been able to use these new tools to hasten
the work of salvation. It's amazing that I get to see this all unfold
before me. What a tender mercy!
So even without rockin' iPads this week has been good! Let me tell
you about one of my favorite people ever. B. Oh my lanta he's so
great. I've told you about him before but every week he just grows and
grows! He's gone from not wanting to even talk
to us outside of a lesson to setting up his own appointments. That may
not mean a lot to you, but WHOA. That's a big deal. So we were in a
lesson this week talking about repentance and Sister A pulls out a
scripture in Doctrine and Covenants that talks
about your confidence waxing strong in the presence of God. So we read
the scripture, B blinks a few times, and bursts out, "How do you
think of these scriptures off the top of your head?! And what does this
even mean?!" He was just baffled how all that
happens. What a hoot.
Went on exchanges to Brownsville. Pretty fun stuff. Brownsville is
right next to Sweet Home, so it was a bit nostalgic. Just a bit.
Ok right now there are like 15 elders in the family history center
that just got finished playing basketball. And they're arguing about
iron man vs batman. Bless their hearts.
But Brownsville was fun. I fed cows for the first time in my entire
life! And I got to pet them. Good times, good times. That night at
dinner I also heard a story about how this guy had to taze a moose to
get him unstuck from wire fencing that was wrapped
around a tree. It took like an hour and we were late to exchange back.
But it makes for a good story! Ha.
Happy 6 months to meeeeee!
Want to hear a awkward/sad story?
Don't worry, I'll tell you.
Last night we were looking for a referral from another ward. So we
were walking around this apartment complex and talking to people that
were outside and whatnot. So this guy starts walking towards us from his
car and we start up a conversation with him.
He looks pretty uninterested and like he wants to run away. We get that
a lot. But I don't understand why. We're awesome! And the message we
have is even better!! Anyway Sister P just jumps to it and asks if
he's ever met missionaries. And without missing
a beat he says, "Yeah. I used to be one," then tries to walk away. Oh
no no no buddy. Not happening. So we ask him about his mission and
whatnot but he wouldn't really talk to us which I find pretty sketchy.
The whole situation was just bizarre. Moral of the
story: returned missionaries- stay active in the church!!
Kay. Rant over.
Oh! So we had interviews with President Samuelian! I just love that
man! So much! I also just so happened to be wearing the same shirt as
Sister Samuelian. That's when you know you've got style! Anyways, we hit
on a few things in the interview. He asked
me about how I feel about my visa-waiter status. I told him that I'm
all good in the hood (basically. didn't use that phraseology.) and that
I'm happy to be serving here because it doesn't matter where you serve.
We're called to serve the Lord. We're assigned
to labor in a mission. The assignment isn't what matters most, it's how
you serve. So I told him that in a little more detail and he just looks
at me and says, "Sister Baker, there are challenges ahead for you. You
know that, right?" I said that I figured
things would get much harder pretty quickly because right now I feel
like I've kind of got my footing even though I'm in a new area. Heavenly
Father always changes things up on me when I start to get comfortable.
So he told me that I'm going to be transferred
to a new area. An area that has probably never seen sisters before and
that I will be training a new missionary. Now I don't know how all of
this will work with my visa paperwork apparently moving along, but I'll
let him know. So the fantastic trio life is
going to end in a few weeks. Then he also talked about how much Satan
hates me. Typically it would hurt my feelings to hear about how much
someone hates me, but it doesn't bother me a bit because I hate him just
as much. Satan hates me and you and everyone
else that is trying to do the Lord's will. And he always will hate us.
#hatersgonnahate
So then I told him about how my mind has been driving me crazy. The
past month or so my mind has been slow. I don't really know how to
describe it, but it just feels like it hasn't been working properly. And
it's not like I think I have a tumor or anything,
it's just that I can't pick up on things as fast as I normally do. For
instance, we talk about the lessons we will teach in the morning during
comp study, then right before we pray to go into the lesson we review
it. It's like as soon as we step into their
house I forget everything we talked about. And every time I pray so
hard that I can remember what it is they need and the commitments we
were going to extend and it just doesn't come. It's been so frustrating
and I don't know why my brain can't handle mission
life! It's been not good. So I told President about that and he was
said that he can tell I'm really smart and I pick up on things very
quickly (I'm not as smart as he described me though). And that I've been
given this temporary mental block as a hurdle so
I can understand and empathize with those that don't catch on as
quickly or those that can't remember things well. That made a lot of
sense to me and has been pretty comforting. It's nice to know that my
brain isn't shutting down permanently, you know?
And that's life in this Salem neck of the woods!
Spread the gospel, follow Christ, remember who you are and what you stand for!
Sister Baker
January 28, 2014 Hoo-rah for Israel!
Hey there hayyy!
How's the work in your neck of the woods?! Because in Salem YSA it's rocking and rolling. Seriously. YSA is the place to be.
I can't even remember everything that happened this week, but you should be assured that it was the
bomb.com.
So Sister A had been sick for quite a few days and had been
having trouble sleeping at night. So one night early this week she was
up coughing a lot, so I asked her if she wanted to get a priesthood
blessing. She said yes but a bit uneasy because it
was like 11 at night. Either way I called the district leader and it
was amazing that he actually answered the phone. We definitely woke him
up. But long story short we got our district leader, his companion,
another companionship, and our Branch President
over within 15 minutes to give Sister A a blessing. It was one of
the sweetest blessings I've ever heard and now she's perfectly fine. The
priesthood is real!!! Seriously. It is. I love it!
Remember the trip we took last week up to the Portland temple? Yeah
me too. Well a recent convert named S invited her friend W
to come with us, and this week we got to have our first lesson with him.
Lemme just say, he's SO PREPARED. He looooved
the temple and totally felt the Spirit. He already has a Book of Mormon
and has committed to be baptized on February 15th! YEAH BUDDY! And get
this, at the first lesson we had with him, he brought his friend named
R who is awesome too! R didn't seem
that interested at first, but later this week we took all three of them
on a church tour and he felt the Spirit and wants to know more. He even
told S that he liked meeting with us and felt really good at
the church. Now
that's what I'm talking about! They love basketball and it's
great because so does just about every other YSA in Salem. So we hooked
them up with some members this week and it was great. Sister P
even played with them. I'm sure you know why I didn't
play... Basketball & I don't mix all that well. But I do enjoy
watching!
Oh yeah, WE HAVE IPADS! How could I forget about that?! Sister
P went to this training meeting (she's a sister training leader.
like THE sister training leader) on Wednesday and surprised us that
night with an iPad mini in her bag! We get ours tomorrow
and I'm so pumped!!! Technology was invented for the spreading of the
gospel. That's a fact. So now we're going to have everything on our
iPads and it's going to be amazing. We've already used it a ton in
lessons and I'm so excited to see the miracles that
will come from it! Apparently the missionary department of the church
also wants to test out missionaries having iPhones with hotspots, too.
All this technology is still in piloting programs and in April all the
data they collect will go to the Quorum of the
Twelve. How awesome is that?!? It's hastening, folks. Get on board!
Ok, and I have to tell you about the T family. They're a
family that lives upstairs in our apartment complex. They're polynesian
and awesome. So naturally Sister P has a connection with them. So
Brother T is actually a less-active member and
after six months of them warming up to Sister P they finally have
let us come over and have family prayer with them. The first time we
went over we watched the Mormon Message "I Am a Child of God" and it was
amazing. The kids are 12,9, and 4. The four-year-old
L was bouncing around like four year olds do when we were just
talking, but as soon as we turned on the video he was mesmerized. I
think at first because it was the tv and he's a kid, but then he got to
listening to the music and watching the video and
the Spirit really touched him. After it was done he started shouting,
"Again, dad! Again!" So we watched it again. Who could refuse that??
Then after the second time watching it we said a prayer with them then
left. The next day we found out that that night
when Brother T (who is a single dad) went to tuck in his kids at night
they were all crying and hugging him because they felt the Spirit when
they watched the video and had never felt that way before. They were
kind of in shock and didn't really know what
to do, but they liked the way they felt. So on Saturday we gave them a
church tour (scavenger hunt & iPad included) and taught them about
the sacrament and baptism. It was amazing! I love that family!
Also, I just love President Samuelian. Yesterday we were sitting in
church on the back row. No investigators there even though we were
expecting 4. Yeah it was a bummer. But we saw President Samuelian walk
by and wave with a huge smile on his face, so
we waved back. Then a few minutes later he walked by again, stopped,
walked back to the doorway and mouthed, "I love each one of you three!"
smiled, and walked away. Tender mercies, yo! I love that man. And we
have interviews with him this week on Thursday.
He's the bomb-diggity.
Well, there's just so much going on in this neck of the Lord's
vineyard and I love it. I'm so amazed that the Lord would trust me with
His precious children in this area and love that I get to serve them
everyday, which is really serving Him. The gospel
is great!
Keep it real.
Be a member missionary.
Open your mouth and the Lord will fill it!
Love you all,
Sister Baker

January 20, 2014 Awesome Week!!
Hey there hey!
Hope everyone's had a good week over yonder. It's been a pretty
awesome week over here in Salem YSA. Ok, for one: I LOVE YSA! It's
great. The bomb-diggity. Awesome possum. It will be weird to be in a
family ward after this.
The YSA branch presidency got all shaken up the week before I got
here, and now the presidency member over missionary work is totally on
the ball. This past week we had a correlation meeting (apparently the
first one in a long time) with all the ward missionaries.
It went so well. We have a big list of less-actives and so the ward
missionaries have an assignment to go out in pairs and visit two people a
week. Seems like a great idea to me. We'll see how it goes!
We helped out a less active in moving and that sure was an
interesting experience. It was like half of the house was packed and the
other half was just sitting out. So that was a little bit awkward. But
we helped them out the best we could. I also may
or may not have played a mini-prank on her boyfriend. I hid in our
trunk and Sister P asked him to get something out of the car. And I
freaked him out. Good times, good times. Who says you can't have fun on
a mission? In a dignified way, of course. I
also hit my shin on the trailer hitch and got scraped up pretty well.
Battle wounds.
So we've been working with this less-active member. He's
really good friends with a ward missionary named C who just got
back from her mission in St. George. They're super opposite and it's
funny to see them interact. But he is pretty
reserved and quite sarcastic, so lessons are always interesting. This
past week we had an amazing, totally Spirit-led lesson. We read through
Alma 32 together and talked about it every few verses. It was the first
time he really opened up and we got to understand
his concerns. We were talking about having a particle of a desire to
believe and C asked him if he had that desire. B just looks at
her, blinks a few times, and says, "No... I just meet with missionaries
for fun." I just about peed my pants! So funny!
We also went up to the Portland temple visitor's center!! It was so
awesome! Let's just say we had a 12 passanger van full of ward
missionaries, recent converts, less actives, and investigators. We even
got a new gator out of it! Righteous! Righteous!
Also we went to visit a potential investigator and met his pretty
cool roommates. And one of them looks like the lead singer from 1
Direction. It was weiiiiiiiird. Oh Lorenzo, I know your true
identity...
And Sister A committed one of our investigators to baptism!! YEAH BUDDY! Her name's E and she's a sweet heart.
So that's what's going on over here in Salem. Never a dull moment!
Keep it real, folks!
Remember who you are and what you stand for!

| And Olivia. She's like my little sis. |
| WENDY!!!! I love her so much!!!!! |
| Tolman family. The bomb diggity. They have the yaks!
BELOW: Robert and Debbie!!! And their dog, Oti.
|
| The final goodbye with Jonsie. And Sister Basting. Seriously, Sister Basting is amazing. Any questions about the second coming? Ask her. She knows. She's the seminary teacher and the bomb.com |
Heyoo!
Coming atcha live from Salem, Oregon!
Serving in YSA is stinking awesome. I love it. We get to teach our
friends everyday. And it's not like friends that are 30 years older than
us, it's friends that are our age. It's awesome.
And I'm back in the trio liiiiiiife! Trios are the
bomb.com. Seriously.
Side note- didja know they added the definition "figuratively" to
the word "literally". Like when people say, "I literally just died." Uh.
No you didn't. You figuratively just died.
But I love being in a trio with Sister A and Sister P. They're the bomb-diggity.
Sister P is from Aiea, Hawaii and my kindred Hawaiian spirit.
She's a legit islander and I'm just trying to get on her level. That
will take a while. Ha! But she's a sister training leader and an amazing
missionary. I've learned SO much from her
this past week. She's almost like the head honcho sister training leader. If they had
sisters as assistants to the president, she would be one. She's
awesome.
And Sister A is from Orem, Utah. She's already graduated from
BYU with a degree in English Linguistics. So she's a smarty pants
editor. And I love her a lot. Even though she's only been out a few days
I'm amazed at how quickly she's caught on to everything.
So we have a lot of fun together. I've figured out that my new
motto is to play as hard as we work. And we work hard! So we've got to
have fun!
I've realized that whenever I get comfortable somewhere, I always
get moved! Pretty crazy, but that's the way the cookie crumbles. I was
finally getting my footing in Sweet Home and now I'm here in YSA. Never a
dull moment on the mission. I love it. So
now I'm getting to know the ward and we've been working to find the
Lord's vision for the area. President Samuelian talks about vision alot
and it blows my mind every time. He talks about Proverbs 29:18 that
says, "where there is no vision, the people perish".
It's our job as missionaries to find and establish the Lord's vision
for the work in this particular section of the world. And when we figure
out what it is specifically that we're working towards we establish
tactics that get us there. So a few nights ago.
Actually it might have been last night. Everything runs together. But
anyway, we were talking about the work and praying together for a
vision. And nothing was coming. Nada. Everything we talked about didn't
feel right. And then we got a phone call from a
random number - it was our new branch president! He wanted us to go
visit someone, so we said we would. Then we asked him about establishing
a vision for the work here and he told us the vision he has and it was
so perfect!!! Seriously an answer to prayer.
Goes to show that when we try our best and do all that we can, the
Lord's grace makes up the rest. It's amazing. So now we have a clear
idea of what we're working towards. Hurrah for Israel!
Yeah so the week before I got here we got an all new branch
presidency and they're on fire. Not literally, figuratively. Ha. Sister
A is rubbing off on me. We've been asking her if our speech is
grammatically correct. It's not. Anyways. The branch
presidency is awesome. They've all either been bishops or stake
presidents or high councilmen and I'm so excited to get to work with
them. The leader that is over missionary work has already scheduled to
have a meeting with us, the ward missionaries, and our
ward mission leader. Oh, we also got a new ward mission leader this
Sunday. Some would think that all these changes would be a hindrance,
but I see it as great progress being made. This transfer is gonna rock!
I've made a breakthrough with myself. I've been trying to focus
outward, but it's been a struggle. We've changed how we do our planning
and our studies. Rather than saying, "What should we teach them
tomorrow?" we say, "What do they need?" Maybe I've been
oblivious the past 5 months, but that's really helped me change my way
of thinking. President Samuelian always says, "It's not.........
about.......... you." So true!! Love that man!
Also, Sister A said she felt like I was going to be her
companion when we all met at the new missionary transfer meeting. Crazy
awesome! Revelation for sure!
Let's see... everyone thinks I'm older than I am. They guess that
I'm anywhere from 21-25. Right now I don't really care that I look
older, but when I hit 40 it had better have the reverse effect.
That's pretty much it for this week! It's been awesome and this upcoming week is gonna rock the socks off of Salem YSA!
Peace & blessins

January 6, 2014 New Year, New Area
Hello hello!
It
feels like a year since the last time I emailed. Once again the Lord
threw me for a loop and I've been transferred to Salem! I'm new serving
in the Young Single Adult branch! Ahhh I'm so stoaked! And my new
companion, Sister P, and I are training a new missionary! She gets
in this Wednesday I think. Pretty crazy stuff.
I think this computer is set in Spanish because about 75% of my words are underlined in red. It looks kind of weird.
I'm
going to be honest, I'm having a hard time remembering everything that
happened this week... I usually bring my journal and share the
highlights, but my journal is in on of my suitcases.
But I'm really going to miss Sweet Home. It's a weird feeling leaving the people I love a whole bunch.
All the red is tripping out my eyes. I'll be sending pictures and captions :)
Love you!

December 30, 2013 Happy New Year!
Hello errybody!
I
hope you all had a fantastic Christmas with friends and family! Or
investigators and less-actives for you cool missionaries. Our Christmas
season was full of two things: illness and miracles. After being sick
for about a week straight, I got pink eye for Christmas! Yeah, so that
was pretty fun. I'm currently on antibiotics and all is well in building
up the kingdom. (when I spell kingdom I always have to say "king" in my
mind or else I get the g and the d mixed up.)
This
is how my pink eye went down. I'm pretty sure I caught it somewhere on
Christmas Eve because I woke up on Christmas with nasty crusty eyes. I'm
sure you wanted to know that. But I pretty much brushed it off because
my eyes weren't bothering me. But by the end of the day one of my eyes
was swollen and goopy. I'm sure you wanted to know that, too. So we went
to our bishop's on Christmas and when he saw me the first thing he said
was, "your eye is booger-y." Yeah bishop. Thanks. So he's a PA and
wrote me a prescription right there. Except I couldn't fill it until the
next day. You know, everything's closed on Christmas and whatnot. So
that's fine. But I woke up with my eye swollen shut the next day. I
looked ridiculous. And probably a bit freaky. It's definitely for the
best that I was home-bound because I would have scared so many
children.
So
I was in quarantine a lot of this week, but it was all honky dory
because Sister J got to go on splits a few times and rock the work.
Miracle there!
My highlight of the week was, of course, W!!! AHH I just love her!! If you met W you would love her too. She's just the bomb.com.
So Sister J and I made gingerbread cookie dough for our
investigators, less-actives we're working with, and some members that
help us out a lot. Sister C (the member we live with) helped out a
lot too because I was sick. Don't want to be spreading those germs with
the Christmas spirit! We were told to make visits on Christmas by
invitation only and we figured if we showed up with cookie dough they
would invite us in. Makes sense, right? Yeah, it totally worked. So we
showed up at W's house on Christmas with our goodies and being the
rockstar she is, invited us right in. It was awesome because her husband
was there in the living room watching tv. And he stayed, turned off the
tv, and talked with us! He's a football coach at the high school, so he
loves to talk sports. I really don't know that much about football, but
I'm a good listener and in high school I just kind of soaked a lot of
stuff in even though I don't know what it means. So I talked to him a
little about football, basically name-dropping my way through it. It was
awesome. We got to show him that we're normal people, not just random
missionaries that are trying to "Mormon-ize" his wife. Because that's
not true. Anyway, he invited us to come back and talk to him again
(meaning about football), but we'll totally get him talking about the
gospel soon. :) Bahhhh I just love W. And she didn't even care that I
was there with pink eye! Don't worry, I hand sanitized.
And then
yesterday was... interesting. We're working with a recent-ish
convert/somewhat less-active named J and his mom. So J
got engaged a few weeks ago and shocked us all. Then he told us that
he's removing his records of the Church because his fiance A wants to
marry a Christian. (Uhh... J?) And then yesterday they show up
together at church. He's just full of surprises. A is such a
sweetheart and just seemed kind of overwhelmed being there. We were
planning on giving her a church tour a few days before, but she was sick
so we didn't think she would come. But A doesn't understand that
we're Christians and even though we've explained it multiple times, it
hasn't clicked yet. And then J explains everything to her as, "the
Mormons do this..." Not "we" but "the Mormons." Hey J, you're a Mormon
too. Just in case you forgot. Oh bless his heart. I need to be more
patient. But A is willing to learn about the Church while J is ready
to abandon ship. Like he's already got his floaties ready. It's rough.
But it's gonna be awesome.
So those are some of the highlights of this week.
OH! I almost forgot. So we've been seeing a less-active named C and his living partner named R. She's the one that has interesting beliefs.
We dropped off some cookie dough and chatted for a bit. Chatting with
them basically consists of listening to her share and then discuss where
our doctrine differs. We're kind of reminding C while teaching
R. But C always suggests he say a closing prayer (yeahhhh!) and
he starts talking about me getting my visa. It went a little bit like
this: "And please bless ....... Sister ...... Chreest-oh that she'll get
her visa soon." Sister J had opened her eyes during the prayer to
see C a few inches away from my name tag, squinting in the dim lights
to read my name. Hahaha I just about died. Seriously.
So I'm excited for the new year and to make
resolutions and goals and what not. It's gonna rock. And we also
activated Facebooks on Saturday! Boo yah. We're convinced it's pretty
much for W so we can show her Mormon Messages. Every video we've
tried to have her look up, she hasn't been able to find. So it's like
manna from heaven to just link it to her page. The Lord provides!
Hurrah!!
But I love you all! I'm so proud off all the work you are all doing!
Keep on keeping on and remember who you are and what you stand for!!
